How to bring traffic to your site?

Building Your Site Correctly

Building Your Site Correctly:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is made up of several factors and executing these correctly is vital to your sites performance. The golden rule is simple: Build the site for your VISITORS and NOT to try and “trick” the search engines. This is the single most important rule of SEO.

I will discuss the 3 key areas of OnPage SEO (changes you can control on your site, like content etc) below.

1. Page Title
The title of your page is extremely important for two reasons. Firstly it tells the search engines what your page is all about. Think of it as the title of a chapter in a book. Secondly it is the link that will appear in the search engine listings. This is what will get the users attention and cause them to make a decision to click on your site or not.

Your title should be kept short and to the point. Your title should also contain your main keyword phrase in it. Let’s say you had a page about where to play poker online and your main keyword phrase you want to target is “play poker”; your title may look something like this:

Play Poker Now – Top Reviews and Free Software!

This title is short and to the point and uses your target phrase at the beginning of the sentence which is exactly what you want. The following would be a bad example of a title for your page:

Play Poker online – poker play – top places to play poker and best poker rooms to play poker online.

The title above uses a method known as “Keyword Stuffing”. Search engines not only frown upon this but we have found shorter titles to work better for ranking purposes. You must also take into account what type of user would click on such a title – I don’t think a very good one. You must remember; the goal is to attract as much QUALITY traffic as possible. I would rather have 10 purchasing customers per day than 2000 non purchasing customers!

2. Meta Tags
You will often hear novices speak about the importance of meta tags in regards to search engine placement. The truth is that Yes, these were a big factor 6 years ago but they are a VERY small factor today. I do however suggest putting them in your page is they are useful for two reasons.

Firstly, some search engines like Yahoo will use the Meta Description tag for the description found in the search engine results. Should they not find a Meta Description tag they will simply use a snippet of text from your page. I prefer to give users the description I want them to see as apposed to letting a computer program decide for me.

Secondly, some of the older search engines using outdated search technology may still see Meta Tags as important. Yes it may be true that these search engines only make up 2% of your traffic but that’s good enough for me.

Meta Tags only take a few seconds to include on your site so go ahead and put them in regardless, it doesn’t hurt. Please however do not use “Keyword Stuffing” when inserting them as you could encounter problems from the search engines.

3. Page Content
In my opinion links are the King and content is the Queen. Content is EXTREMELY important to the search engines and it goes a long way to making up your total site score.

When writing your content think about what your users will want and forget about what the search engines may want. Ultimately we have the same goal as the search engines – to give users the best information possible.

You need to write fresh unique content and it is essential to make frequent updates. The more updates you make the more often the search engine spiders will visit your site.

Each time a spider visits your site it notes any updates you have made through various time stamps. If it sees you have not made updates in a while it will make less frequent visits. Make updates often and the spiders will visit your site more. This will result in you getting more of your sites pages indexed. The more pages you have indexed the better your chances are of being found in the search engines!

There are several nice little tricks you can use to keep your sites updated automatically. These include adding RSS feeds, blogs and user forums. These will keep your site up to date and build pages for you automatically.

By giving your site visitors excellent content you keep them on your site longer. This is very important to the search engines. The longer users stay on your site the more important your sites info is seen as. It makes sense that a site where users visit for 10 minutes is probably better than one where they visit for 30 seconds.

You will also receive valuable links from visitors if they like your site. This is extremely important as each link counts as a “vote” for your site – the more votes you have, the more popular your site will be to the search engines.
